# How to protect your Discord server from raids

A raid can turn a calm server into chaos in under a minute. The good news: most raids can be blocked with a few settings and a bot that reacts faster than you.

## What is a Discord raid?

A raid is a coordinated wave of dozens, sometimes hundreds of accounts joining within seconds. Their goal: flood the channels with spam, insults or shocking images, harass members, or simply make the server unusable.

These accounts are often created in bulk right before the attack, or driven by scripts. That’s what gives them away: they are new, numerous, and all arrive at the same time.

## Signs of a raid in progress

- A wave of joins within seconds in the welcome channel.
- Accounts created a few hours or a few days ago.
- Usernames or avatars that look alike.
- The same message, or mass mentions, posted by several accounts at once.

## Discord settings to turn on

Discord already offers several protections, in the server settings:

- Verification level: require at least a verified email, or better, an account registered on Discord for more than 5 minutes.
- Two-factor authentication for moderation: make your moderators turn on 2FA.
- Invites: prefer links with a limited duration or number of uses. During an attack, pause them from Server Settings > Invites.
- Permissions: remove @everyone mentions and invite creation from new members.
- Slowmode: turn it on in public channels to limit how many messages an account can send.

## Block raids automatically with an anti-raid bot

These settings slow a raid down, but they don’t detect it: an account registered 6 minutes ago passes the medium verification level. You need a protection that reacts to the pace of arrivals, day and night, in a split second.

**With Orion Shield ·** Orion turns raid mode on for 1 hour as soon as the join limit is reached, for example 5 in 10 seconds. The captcha, the minimum account age and the anti-bot filter the rest.

## What to do during and after a raid

- Don’t answer the raid accounts: that’s what they want.
- Pause invites if the wave keeps coming.
- Also pause private messages between members who aren’t friends, from Discord’s security actions.
- Ban the raid accounts: Orion lists them in its raid alert.
- Delete the messages left in the channels.
- Find the invite link that was used and delete it.
- Once things are calm, reassure your members with a short announcement.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I stop a raid on Discord?

Pause the server’s invites, ban the raid accounts and delete their messages. An anti-raid bot like Orion handles the most urgent part by itself: it turns raid mode on as soon as too many accounts join at once.

Is Discord’s verification level enough against raids?

No. It slows very new accounts down, but doesn’t detect a wave of joins. You need a protection that watches the pace of arrivals, like Orion’s automatic raid mode.
